Hay filtros para todo tipo de finalidades:
- Los filtros neutros atenúan la luz de los objetos más brillantes. Este tipo de filtros están disponibles en forma de sencillos filtros lunares, filtros grises o filtros polarizadores de ajuste continuo.
- Los filtros de colores incrementan el contraste de determinadas estructuras en los planetas. Por eso, también se conocen como filtros planetarios.
- Existen filtros de colores especiales para astrofotografía, que generalmente se comercializan en juegos denominados L-RGB.
- Los filtros para nebulosas o de interferencia cancelan determinadas regiones del espectro de luz. Esto sirve, por ejemplo, para reducir el efecto de la contaminación lumínica y mejorar el contraste (filtros UHC y CLS). Los filtros de líneas solo dejan pasar líneas espectrales concretas y, por eso, son ideales para la observación de nebulosas.
- Los filtros de bloqueo impiden el paso de la luz a partir de determinada longitud de onda, mientras que los filtros de paso hacen lo contrario. Así, por ejemplo, los filtros de bloqueo UV bloquean la radiación nociva de la luz ultravioleta.
Seleccionando los filtros adecuados podemos mejorar considerablemente las posibilidades de aplicación de nuestro telescopio.
