Los acromáticos representan el diseño clásico y más extendido de los telescopios de lentes actuales. En el objetivo llevan no una, sino dos lentes, generalmente de vidrio de pedernal y de corona, que actúan a modo de lente positiva y negativa.

Ambas lentes presentan un índice de refracción y de dispersión diferentes con la finalidad de compensar la mayor parte de las aberraciones cromáticas. Sin embargo, pese a ello, siempre prevalece un pequeño error. Para corregirlo aún mejor, hay que recurrir a los telescopios apocromáticos.
