Las monturas acimutales permiten girar el telescopio tanto en el plano vertical como a lo largo del horizonte. El ángulo horizontal también se denomina acimut.
Las cosas acimutales son tan fáciles de montar como los trípodes fotográficos. Otra variante muy popular es la montura monobrazo. La imagen se muestra un ejemplo típico. En este caso, el telescopio se sujeta lateralmente en el brazo por medio de una abrazadera.
